🚨 Jadeveon Clowney Signs 1yr Deal with Browns

This just in via Ian Rapoport:

Apparently it’s an $8 million deal with $2 million in incentives for a possible $10 million.

So now the Browns have the #1 pick in the 2017 draft in Myles Garrett and the #1 pick in the 2014 draft in Jadeveon Clowney, both on their defensive line.

And they also have 2018 #1 overall pick Baker Mayfield at QB. Do the Browns now have the most #1 overall picks on their team in NFL history? I think so, from what I can tell. I know the Chiefs at one point had 2005 #1 overall pick Alex Smith and 2013 #1 overall pick Eric Fisher, the Rams at one point had 2008 #1 overall pick Jake Long and 2010 #1 pick Sam Bradford.

Look, I know people think Clowney is washed because he hasn’t done much over the past few years. He only managed to play in 8 games with the Titans in 2020, and played just 38% of the team’s defensive snaps. Tennessee was terrible on defense last year, too.

But Clowney still has loads of potential. He’s only 28, he’s made three Pro Bowls in his career (2016-2018), and if he can stay healthy, he can absolutely be an impact player opposite Myles Garrett.

Clowney played his best football opposite JJ Watt, so it’s possible the presence of Myles Garrett will allow him to just tee off in one-on-one blocking situations and go nuts.

If things don’t work out with Clowney, it’s only a one year deal for the Browns and they can cut bait easily. I think this is a great signing for the Browns–it’s low risk, high reward.

The Browns have really made an effort to upgrade their defense this offseason. They already signed safety John Johnson, along with former Eagles’ DT Malik Jackson, former Rams CB Troy Hill, former Colts LB Anthony Walker, and former Falcons first round DE pick Takk McKinley.

Plus they get CB Greedy Williams back for 2021. He was their 2nd round pick in 2019 but missed all of 2020 with an injury.

The Browns’ defense should be a lot better in 2021.
